Monastery Tour of Ladakh (18 Days)
Day 1: Arrive at Delhi
Assistance upon arrival at New Delhi. Transfer to your hotel and overnight stay at the hotel in New Delhi.
Day 2: Delhi - Leh
Early in the morning transfer to the airport to catch a flight for Leh. Upon arrival at Leh airport, meet our representative and then transfer to a hotel for relaxing and acclimatization. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.
Day 3: Leh – Shey – Thiksey - Hemis
On this day, you will go on a sightseeing trip to some ancient monasteries in this area. Shey Gompa is about 15 km from Leh. It used to be the summer palace of the Kings of Ladakh. There are lots of Stupas and Gompas built around the palace. Deldan Namgyal built the Shey palace at the beginning of 17th century AD. The main attraction in Shey is the 12m Shakyamuni Buddha statue inside the Dresthang Gompa. Thiksey Gompa, close to Shey, is about 17 km from Leh. The monastery is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Ladakh and belongs to the Gelugpa order. Hemis, about 45 km south of Leh is one of the most famous and largest monasteries in Ladakh. It belonged to the Drukpa order and was founded in the early 17th century. The setting is perfect with the monastery cradled in a lovely valley, surrounded by streams and fronted by long walls. Overnight stay at the guest house.
Day 4: Leh – Alchi
After breakfast, drive to Alchi, en-route visit Basgo Palace, and Likir Monastery. The present Gompa in Likir dates back to the 18th century. It contains large clay images of Buddha and various old manuscripts. It also houses an exciting collection of Thangkas, ancient religious and domestic costumes and implements, etc. Arrive in Alchi by the afternoon. Visit the monastery at Alchi; spend the afternoon exploring the village. Overnight stay in a camp or a guest house.
Day 5: Alchi – Lamayuru
After breakfast proceed for sightseeing of Lamayuru Monastery. Lamayuru has fascinating caves carved out of the mountainside. Also known as Yung Drung (Swastika), it is situated on a high promontory overlooking the village and valley. Considering the sheer spectacle value, no other Gompa can match Lamayuru. Overnight stay in a guest house/hotel.
Day 6: Lamayuru – Kargil
In the morning, we visit the Lamayuru monastery to be part of the morning religious ceremony. It’s a very soothing and spiritual experience to be there among these warm and friendly monks. Then drive to Kargil and overnight stay in the hotel.
Day 7: Kargil – Rangdum
In the morning after breakfast, we drive towards Suru valley along the Suru River. En-route we see the mighty twin peaks of Nun and Kun among the most challenging mountains in Ladakh. By evening, we arrive at Rangdum plains in the Zanskar region. Overnight stay in the tents in the picturesque campsite.
Day 8: Rangdum – Padum
In the morning, we start and visit the famous Rangdum Monastery perched on a single rock in the middle of the valley. After that, we drive to Padum, the capital of the Zanskar region. By late afternoon, we reach Padum and check-in at the hotel for the overnight stay at the guest house.
Day 9 & Day 10: Padum
Visit various monasteries and villages for two days. Stay overnight at the hotel in Padum. Places that can be visited in and around Padum like Karsha, Sani –Zongkhul, Thongde, Zangla, Bardan - Pibting, etc., are covered. Overnight stay at the guest house.
Day 11: Padum – Rangdum
The morning after breakfast checkout and drive back to Rangdum. Overnight stay in tented camp.
Day 12: Rangdum – Kargil
The next morning, we drive back to Kargil. On arrival, check-in at the hotel. Later proceed for a short visit to the town, which has some of the most excellent examples of Turkish style houses. Overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 13: Kargil – Leh
On our way back to Leh, we can visit the Basgo monastery, famous for its Buddha statue. In Leh, overnight stay in the hotel.
Day 14: Leh
Day at leisure or option of visiting more monasteries. Evening at leisure of your own to walk across Leh market and to buy some souvenirs for your friends and family. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.
Day 15: Leh - Delhi
In the morning, transfer to the airport to catch a flight for Delhi. Arrival at New Delhi Airport. Assistance on arrival and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon and evening at leisure. Overnight stay at the hotel in New Delhi.
Day 16: New Delhi- Agra (250 Km) 6 hours
After breakfast, we drive to Agra crossing Delhi and then entering Uttar Pradesh, one of the biggest states in India. The trail passes through many industrial Areas and the fertile land of Indo-Gangetic plans. We make a stopover at a Rajasthani cuisine restaurant. Arrival at Agra and transfer to the hotel. Evening visit to Agra Fort. Overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 17: Agra – New Delhi (250 Km) 6 hours
We make an early visit to the Taj Mahal to see the sunrise. Mughal Emperor Shah-Jahan built this beautiful monument of love. One among the Seven Wonders of the World, Taj-Mahal was in loving memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz. The graves of the couple are resting in peace within the Taj Mahal itself. Drive back to the hotel for breakfast, and after breakfast, we check out from the hotel and continue our drive back to New Delhi.
Day 18: New Delhi International Airport
Early morning transfer to International Airport New Delhi to board flight back home.
